Conferences organised under the auspices of the Grotiana Foundation
‘First conference organised for the commemoration of the Quattrocentenary of De iure belli ac pacis (1625-2025)’
International conference organised by the Department of Roman Law and Legal History at the University of Leuven, 15-16 November 2018
Between 2018 and 2025, the Grotiana Foundation will sponsor the organisation of a series of international conferences to mark the upcoming quatercentenary of the first publication of De iure belli ac pacis libri tres, Grotius’s magnum opus in the field of international law. The conferences, which will culminate in 2025 in a grand closing conference at the Peace Palace, The Hague, will focus on the legal analysis of Grotius’s work and his contribution to the development of legal theory, natural law and international law.
The conferences will cover different subfields of the law, whereby for every theme papers will be presented on the predecessors of Grotius, the ideas of Grotius, his later impact, and the topicality of his work of current law.
The Leuven 2018 conference, which is the first in the series, focuses on three themes:
– Suarez and Grotius (convener Wim Decock)
– Grotius on contract (convener Wim Decock)
– Grotius on war, force, and civil strife (conveners Randall Lesaffer and Viktorija Jakjimovska)
This conference is supported by FWO, the Research Foundation Flanders, in the context of its research projects ‘Early Modern Contract Thought and the Late-Scholastic Legacy’ and ‘Doubtful War: Political and Legal Responses to Foreign Civil Wars’.
